Học tập tự định hướng được xem là một năng lực thiết yếu của người học thế kỉ 21, khi công nghệ số và môi trường học tập trực tuyến ngày càng phổ biến. Bài viết này trình bày về khái niệm và cấu trúc của học tập tự định hướng trong đó nhấn mạnh tiếp cận quá trình học tập và đặc điểm của người học. Trên cơ sở tổng hợp các nghiên cứu quốc tế và trong nước, bài viết làm rõ vai trò của học tập tự định hướng trong môi trường học trực tuyến, đặc biệt nhấn mạnh tác động của môi trường học tập hỗ trợ bởi công nghệ và thái độ của người học với việc sử dụng công nghệ đối với sự hình thành và phát triển năng lực học tập tự định hướng. Kết quả cho thấy môi trường học tập có sự hỗ trợ của công nghệ mang tính linh hoạt, giàu tương tác, thúc đẩy tính tự chủ và khả năng siêu nhận thức của sinh viên. Tuy nhiên, những nghiên cứu về học tập tự định hướng ở trong nước hiện nay còn rất hạn chế. Từ đó, bài viết chỉ ra những khoảng trống và những định hướng nghiên cứu liên quan đến chủ đề này trong tương lai.
