Hiện nay, du lịch thiện nguyện đang là một xu hướng du lịch phổ biến, du khách tham gia du lịch thiện nguyện không chỉ tìm kiếm những trải nghiệm mới và thú vị mà còn mong muốn đóng góp tích cực cho cộng đồng địa phương nơi họ ghé thăm. Xu hướng này cho thấy sự phát triển của một tư duy du lịch mới, tập trung vào sự tương tác và trải nghiệm độc đáo, không chỉ mang lại lợi ích cho du khách và cộng đồng địa phương mà còn góp phần vào việc phát triển du lịch bền vững. Nghiên cứu sử dụng phương pháp thu thập, chọn lọc thông tin, kế thừa từ các nghiên cứu và đánh giá tổng hợp nhằm phân tích động cơ của người tham gia du lịch thiện nguyện, đặt trong mối quan hệ với phát triển du lịch bền vững. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu nhằm đề xuất giải pháp khai thác loại hình du lịch thiện nguyện đúng với tiềm năng, giúp các tổ chức du lịch duy trì và nâng cao sự tham gia của du khách trong hoạt động du lịch thiện nguyện bằng cách thấu hiểu và đáp ứng đúng nhu cầu, tối ưu hoá trải nghiệm cho du khách. Và hơn hết, định hình du lịch thiện nguyện đóng góp tích cực và bền vững cho cộng đồng địa phương và môi trường tự nhiên, hướng đến phát triển du lịch bền vững.
