Abstract


The genus Helicteres L. currently has 9 species recorded in Vietnam. In the Bay Nui region - An Giang, there are 3 species that are often confused with each other, with the common name “An xoa”. This taxonomic ambiguity necessitates precise identification to ensure proper utilization in medicinal applications. The objective of this study was to compare plant traits and plant microanatomy in order to aid in the precise identification of each Helicteres species. Morphological characteristics were analyzed through a detailed description of root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, and seed structures, while plant anatomy was examined using thin-sectioning and double-staining techniques to observe microstructural variations. H. hirsuta Lour., H. lanceolata DC. and H. isora L. were analyzed and compared. The comparative analysis revealed that each Helicteres species exhibits distinct stem and leaf anatomical features, underscoring significant interspecific differences. These findings highlight the importance of correct taxonomic identification in medicinal plant research and suggest the need for further phytochemical and pharmacological studies to assess the therapeutic potential of these herbal resources.
