Abstract

Pneumonia is a common respiratory disease in children. This study describes a series of cases to present the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of pneumonia in children under 60 months at Thai Nguyen National Hospital from August 2023 to June 2024. The data collected included 212 pediatric patients diagnosed with pneumonia according to the standards of the Ministry of Health using pre-designed research records. The results showed that severe pneumonia accounted for 42.9%, boys accounted for 58%. The group from 2 to under 12 months was the most common (42.9%), the group under 2 months of age had the lowest rate (19.3%). The severity of pneumonia decreased with increasing age. The most common systemic danger sign is refusal to breastfeed or not being able to drink (58.2%). Common symptoms were cough (94.3%), fever (72.2%). Physical examination showed that 90.6% of children had rapid breathing, 75.9% had wheezing, and 93.4% had moist/crackling rales. Common X-ray images were scattered opaque lesions in both lungs (29.2%), increased density of pulmonary blood vessels (19.8%). The percentage of white blood cell increased or decreased for 46.3%, and quantitative CRP increased was 51.9%. There was a difference in the rate of anemia in the pneumonia and severe pneumonia groups with p < 0.05.
