Background: Acute appendicitis in children is a common surgical emergency in clinical settings. However, the clinical symptoms of appendicitis vary from person to person, so it is easy to diagnose with many other diseases. Laparoscopic appendectomy has become a routine surgery to replace open surgery. This study aims at assessing the outcomes of treatment of acute appendicitis in children with laparoscopic surgery at Thai Nguyen University Hospital.
Materials and methods: 126 pediatric patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis and surgically excised by laparoscopic surgery from 01/01/2014 to 30/09/2015 at Hospital of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Recorded data includes operative time, postoperative length of stay and complications.
Results: For 126 patients, at the average age of 10.2 ± 3 years old (from 4 – 15 years), the operative time was 50.34 ± 22,22 minutes (from 15 – 120 minutes), and the length of postoperative stay was 4.63 ± 1.62 days (from 1 - 10 days) without postoperative complications.
Conclusions: Laparoscopic appendectomy for pediatric appendicitis is an effective, safe and short-term technique that ensures aesthetics compared to open surgery. This surgery can be widely applied at the primary care level for cases of acute appendicitis in uncomplicated children..
