Abstract


This study aims to provide the first data on the biodiversity of species of aquatic insects and the structure of their functional feeding group according to stream orders in Ngu Chi Son commune, Lao Cai province. These data are the basis for monitoring and managing stream ecosystems as well as conserving aquatic insects in the study area. This study also adds new data and valuable evidence on the distribution of aquatic insect functional feeding groups across stream orders, thereby enhancing their application in freshwater quality monitoring. Qualitative sampling and quantitative sampling were conducted in October 2023 and January 2024 at 12 sampling sites in first-order streams, second-order streams, and third-order streams; the results have shown that: (1) 93 species belonging to 89 genera of 46 families belonging to 9 orders of aquatic insects; (2) 79 species of aquatic insects were found in first-order streams, 42 species in second-order streams, and 40 species in third-order streams, (3) Margalef species richness index (d) ranged from 1.3 - 5.9 (average 3.0 ± 1.5), Shannon - Weaver biodiversity index (H') ranged from 1.2 - 3.1; (average 2.1 ± 0.6); (4) The structure of functional feeding groups with five groups, in which the collector-gatherers (c-g) dominates in the proportion of individuals at all stream orders, the scrapers (sc) tends to increase, the shredders (sh) tends to decrease in the proportion of individuals from first-order streams to third-order streams. The predators (p) tend to be stable at all stream orders and have a number of individuals at the threshold of equilibrium with their prey (0.10 < Pr < 0.20).
