Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of insulin use in individuals with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus and related factors regarding insulin therapy. This cross-sectional observational questionnaire-based survey was carried out among 145 type 2 diabetic outpatients at Out Patient Department, Hue Central hospital during April to July 2025. The data were collected through a face-to-face interview. The median age of participants was 63,71±12,53 years; 51.0% were male individuals and 49.0% were female individuals. Among the total respondents, 102 (70.4%) of the participants claimed as they have lived with type 2 diabetes for more than 5 years.  The number of respondents used insulin therapy for about 1–5 years showed preponderance (46,9%). With regard to the level of knowledge among the study participants, 65.5% of them had adequate knowledge. The mean knowledge score was higher in participants who had the following characteristics: educational level, number of insulin injections per day and regular follow-ups of their diabetes mellitus. These factors affected the level of knowledge significantly (p-value <0.05) among the studied population. The overall knowledge of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was satisfactory. The study also showed that patients with high education level, using appropriate number of insulin injections and regular follow-ups of their diabetes mellitus had better knowledge of insulin use.
