Abstract


This study was conducted to determine some clinical symptoms and pathological changes in dogs with hookworm disease in Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province. Research data were collected by observing the clinical manifestations of 213 hookworm-infected dogs and dissecting 7 dogs with severe hookworm infection. Tissue samples were collected from dissected dogs, soaked in 10% formalin, embeded with Paraffin, and dyed Hematoxylin-eosin. The study results showed that 213 observed dogs, there were 50 dogs showing clinical symptoms, accounting for 23.47%, with main clinical manifestations such as thinness, shaggy hair, decreased appetite, or loss of appetite, anorexia, abdominal distension, constipation, diarrhea, bloody stools, and tremors. Major macroscopic lesions were observed including catarrhal inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, proliferative inflammatory bowel disease, hematoma or hemorrhage, inflammatory lung with many hematomas, and liver with many hematomas. Microscopic lesions of infected dogs were intestinal mucosal inflammation, degeneration, sloughing, inflammatory cell infiltrates in the intestinal muscle layer, mainly eosinophils, bronchial lumen containing a lot of red blood cell, sloughed epithelium.
