Nghiên cứu này nhằm đánh giá cấu trúc thương mại giữa Việt Nam và Liên minh châu Âu trong bối cảnh thực thi Hiệp định Thương mại Tự do Việt Nam - Liên minh châu Âu từ đó phân tích mức độ tận dụng hiệp định và tiềm năng mở rộng hợp tác thương mại song phương. Dữ liệu thống kê từ “Hệ thống dữ liệu thương mại quốc tế” - Trade Map của Trung tâm Thương mại Quốc tế giai đoạn 2004-2023 được xử lý và phân tích định lượng bằng các chỉ số thương mại phổ biến như chỉ số lợi thế so sánh hiện hữu, chỉ số cường độ thương mại, chỉ số bổ sung thương mại. Kết quả cho thấy Việt Nam có lợi thế so sánh ổn định với 18 nhóm hàng xuất khẩu (HS-2), nổi bật là dệt may, thủy sản, linh kiện điện tử và gỗ. Tuy nhiên, chỉ số cường độ thương mại giữa Việt Nam và Liên minh châu Âu chỉ dao động quanh mức 0,45–0,55 trong toàn bộ giai đoạn, thấp hơn nhiều so với chỉ số cường độ thương mại của Việt Nam với Hoa Kỳ (trên 1,4) và Trung Quốc (trên 1,2), cho thấy mức độ hội nhập thực chất với thị trường Liên minh châu Âu còn hạn chế. Chỉ số bổ sung thương mại giữa hai bên cũng phản ánh cơ cấu xuất khẩu của Việt Nam chỉ ở mức tương đối phù hợp với nhu cầu nhập khẩu của Liên minh châu Âu. Nghiên cứu nhấn mạnh rằng việc tận dụng hiệu quả Hiệp định Thương mại Tự do giữa Việt Nam và Liên minh châu Âu đòi hỏi không chỉ cải thiện chất lượng sản phẩm, mà còn cần điều chỉnh cơ cấu hàng hóa xuất khẩu theo hướng phù hợp hơn với nhu cầu thị trường nhập khẩu.
