OVERVIEW OF LONG AN’S ECONOMY UNDER THE NGUYEN DYNASTY (1802-1859)

Currently, researches on Long An are mainly revolutionary movements, but Long An under the Nguyen dynasty, especially economy, has not been extensively discussed by researchers. Through carrying out scientific research and analyzing documents, the paper presents the basic characteristics as well as reconstitutes Long An’s economy in the first half of the nineteenth century. Under the Nguyen dynasty, Long An’s economy significantly changed, making a notable contribution to stabilizing society, giving people secure and settled lives, generating considerable revenues for the State and developing Southern Vietnam’s economy. In the meantime, it posed challenges for economic and administrative management and public order management to the authorities here. In other aspects, the paper is practically significant in researching and establishing policies on Long An’s economic management in the current period. This is a reference to doing research and teaching history in Long An, making a substantial contribution to enriching documents on researching Southern Vietnam’s economy under the Nguyen dynasty.
