Abstract

This study investigates the physical characteristics and behavioral traits of multi-toed chickens to develop a plan for their care, conservation, and genetic development among the Dao ethnic group in Trai Cau town, Thai Nguyen province. Using participatory evaluation methods, the study surveyed 750 chicken-raising households across 10 communes/towns in Dong Hy district, 3 communes in Dai Tu district, and 2 communes in Vo Nhai district. At the time of the survey, a total of 89,992 chickens were raised, among which 427 were multi-toed chickens (0.47%). Each chicken exhibited its toe number from hatching, which remained stable until maturity. Most had 6 toes (71.43% - 80.26%). At hatching, their plumage was predominantly yellowish-gray (66.67%), and their legs were yellow. By 8 - 10 weeks of age, the sex of the chickens became distinguishable (roosters were mainly red-black, while hens were yellowish-brown). When mature, they displayed strong flocking behavior and enjoyed pecking at grass, dust bathing, roosting on branches, and fluttering. Multi-toed chickens had 6 - 8 toes that did not touch the ground, with yellow skin, attractive plumage, strong foraging ability, and a preference for perching on high structures.
