Abstract

In this study, TT10K8 cemented carbides were prepared by powder metallurgy method. On the other hand, tantalum carbide (TaC) powder was synthesized by reduction method, simultaneous carbideization of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) with carbon and carbon content reached 5.98 ÷ 6.02% was used to prepare TT10K8 cemented carbides. The influence of sintering temperature on density, hardness and flexural strength was studied through corresponding measurements. After sintering at 1460 oC, resulting cemented carbides had a density of ≈ 13.15 g/cm3, hardness of ≈ 91.5 HRA and flexural strength of ≈ 1570 MPa. The results showed that TT10K8 cemented carbides by the study basically met the requirements for making metal cutting tools. To evaluate the machining ability of the TT10K8 cemented carbides of the study with the TT10K8-ZCC cemented carbides available on the market, experimental machining was performed on C45 structural steel through heat treatment with a hardness of about 62 HRC to determine the tool life, showing that the front and back wear of the tool were improved by 11.6% and 5% respectively.
