Abstract

In this study, errors in documents translatedfrom Chinese into Vietnamese were analysed in order to identify common mistakes that students make in the process of translating. Currently, there are several publications related to the theory and practice of translation, but there is no research publication on this matter. The survey method was used to collect data through students’ translations, and then qualitative analysis was applied. It shows that errors students made are mainly incorrect translation,  inaccurate expression and wrong styles. The cause of these errorsmostly come from the students’ limited foreign language ability due to their uncertain grasp of Chinese grammar and vocabulary. In addition, the influence of the using word-to-word translation method and direct translation to translate texts improperly from Chinese into Vietnameseand negative transfer resulting from Sino-Vietnamesesounds is regarded as one of the important findings of the study. In order to overcome these errors as well as improve translation quality from Chinese into Vietnamese, students need to improve their target language abilityand their ability to express their native language. At the same time, students need to master the translation techniques, basic knowledge and information on relevant translation topics. The study results are expected to assist teachers in finding the effective ways to teach as well as helping their students avoid making similar mistakes, which will improve students’ translation quality from Chinese into Vietnamese.
