Abstract

Taxonomic work on the terrestrial snail genus Moellendorffia Ancey, 1887 in Vietnam is still scarce. Most Mollendoeffia species are described with limited shell morphology and distribution data. To address this knowledge gap, we surveyed for terrestrial snails in Vietnam. Species of Moellendorffia have been recognised as occurring from southern China to northern Vietnam, and are characterised by flattened to globose-conic shells, periostracum thick and covered with short to long hairs; aperture trigonal, entirely free from preceding whorl, with barriers inside, and externally marked with furrows; parietal wall elevated to form prominent nodule. This study has resulted in the recognition of eight species and subspecies in Vietnam. Most species have narrow ranges with four only known from their type locations. One subspecies, Moellendorffia loxotata exasperata (Bavay & Dautzenberg, 1909), has been listed as endangered, but several more species in the complex, probably from both mainland and coastal islands, also merit listing.
