Abstract


The aim of the study is to evaluate the oral acute toxicity and hypolipidemic effect of green coffee bean extract (GCBE) on Swiss albino mice. The GCBE was standardized before testing. The model of hyperlipidemia in mice was induced by tyloxapol (Triton WR 1339), and the extract was evaluated at doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of body weight. The hypolipidemic effect was evaluated by the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) in serum. For oral acute toxicity, the LD50 of GCBE on mice was 5.24 ± 0.75 g/kg. The results of lipid indices showed that the GCBE at doses of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg reduced LDL-C, TG, and TC compared to the pathological group (p < 0.05). The hypolipidemic effect of GCBE 300 mg/kg was comparable to that of atorvastatin 64 mg/kg. The experimental results of this study suggest that GCBE could be used as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
