Competence-based learning and teaching  focus on the formation and development of competencies for learners, so that learners can actively, autonomously, proactively and creatively solve problems in learning practice and life. This study aims to help improve students' self-study competence to meet the requirements of educational innovations aiming at developing learner qualities and capacities . On the basis of theoretical research, the article has outlined some necessary skills that students should practice to develop self-study competence such as: identifying learning needs, setting goals, making study plans, selecting resources and strategies, practicing, assessing  and reinforcing learning. Some solutions are also proposed to develop self-study for students. Research results show that the development of self-study capacity will help students to be proactive, independent and have a high sense of responsibility, because students have to self-study and self-study under the guidance of lecturers rather than holding hands just work.
