Lao Cai is a hilly town and on the banks of the Red River. It is 296 km far from Hanoi and 340 km by road to the North West, Vietnam. Besides, Lao Cai is a border town with a distance of 35 km from Sa Pa town and 500 km from Kunming city in Yunnan province, China. With such favorable location, many residential areas and developed industrial zones require the land for construction in recent years. In fact, the land management of the city is facing to many difficulties, especially in terms of compensation for land clearance. Urban subregion projects have emerged with the potential to develop the city's economy, and compensation for land clearance is a matter of concern. This study focuses on compensation and resettlement when the State recovers land to build new urban projects in the area of Lao Cai city from 2012 to 2017, identified factors that influencing and proposing some solutions to improve the effectiveness of the land compensation clearance and the land management.
