Abstract


Turmeric essential oil is a common essential oil, widely used by Vietnamese people to treat antimicrobial infections. However, few studies currently focus on its antifungal properties, especially against clinical dermatophytes. This study was performed to investigate and compare the antifungal activity of turmeric essential oil and that of ketoconazole using dilution method. In addition, the synergistic effect of turmeric essential oil and other commonly used antifungal agents was also investigated using the diffusion and agar well methods. On the one hand, turmeric essential oil demonstrated significant activity against reference strains and clinical isolates. On the other hand, the susceptibility of ketoconazole was shown to be dependent on the fungal species. Furthermore, the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration index of both reference and clinical strains was inferior to 1.0 for all tested combinations, revealing a promising antifungal activity of the turmeric essential oil in combination with ketoconazole and terbinafine. These findings suggested the potential application of turmeric essential oil as an antifungal agent, especially when with ketoconazole and terbinafine.
