Abstract

This study evaluated the outcomes of surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome at the Hospital of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy. A descriptive, longitudinal, uncontrolled cross-sectional study was conducted involving 32 patients who underwent transverse carpal ligament release surgery from 01/2019 – 01/2024. After six months, the results showed that the age group of 45 to 60 years accounted for the highest proportion at 46.9%, the prevalence of disease is higher in females than in males. The Boston Symptom Severity Score decreased from 3.76 ± 0.35 to 1.72 ± 0.27, and the Boston Functional Status Score decreased from 3.66 ± 0.31 to 1.73 ± 0.28. Positive rates for Tinel’s sign (65.6%), Phalen’s test (62.5%), and Durkan’s test (87.5%) decreased to 7.1%, 11.9%, and 14.3%, respectively. The proportion of patients with thenar muscle atrophy decreased from 21.9% to 6.3%. These changes were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Additionally, the proportion of patients with normal skin sensation increased to 89.1%. Surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome provides clear and significant improvement in hand symptoms.
