Abstract

Botrytis cinerea is a harmful fungus affecting many different crops. To date, numerous studies have shown that plant essential oils are effective in inhibiting pathogenic fungi and have the potential to replace chemically synthesized fungicides. This study compares the inhibitory effect of plant essential oils (may chang, garlic, fennel) in nano form against Botrytis cinerea causing gray mold disease. First, Botrytis cinerea was isolated and purified on potato dextrose agar medium. After that, nanocarriers containing plant essential oils (may chang, garlic, fennel) were synthesized using homogenization and sonication method. The inhibitory effect on fungal mycelium growth of these nanoencapsulated essential oils were carried out using the petri dish method. The results indicated that three nanoencapsulated essential oils of may chang, garlic, and fennel were successfully synthesized with an average particle size of less than 120 nm and stability maintained after 2 months of storage. In vitro results showed that the nano form of garlic essential oil exhibited the best antifungal effectiveness, followed by the may chang and the fennel essential oil.
