Abstract

The formation of the second phases in duplex stainless steels reduces the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance of this steel group. In this study, the influence of the second phases on the corrosion resistance of the common duplex stainless steel AISI 2205 was experimentally investigated. The steel was quenched at 1100 oC, tempered at 750 oC and different holding time. The formation of the second phase in the microstructure was recorded. Then, the electrochemical corrosion parameters of the steel after heat treatment were measured. The results showed that the second phases formed about 1.5% with the holding time of 15 minutes at 750 oC and caused a reduction in the pitting corrosion potential of the ferrite phase by 44%. This shows that, with just a small amount of the second phases appearing in the microstructure, the corrosion resistance of duplex steel is significantly reduced. This is a recommendation in the use of duplex stainless steel. The attention should be paid to heat treatment processes and high temperature applications.
