Abstract

Thach An district is located in the southeast of Cao Bang province, is the gateway for exchange and contact between the lowland and the upland region. With the use of historical and logical methods, this study aims to present the economic, social and cultural structure of the villages in Thach An district (Cao Bang province) in the 19th century. The research results show that the Nguyen court implemented policies to limit the power of land lords. However, in fact, the land lords only partially implemented those policies in Thach An district. The management of this land still mainly belongs to the local land lords. Economically, agriculture still played an important role in the lives of residents. Besides, handicraft and trade activities were also paid attention. Through these activities, economic and social exchanges were also formed to help strengthen international trade relations and unite the community among ethnic groups. This was also the basis for creating favorable conditions for cultural exchanges between regions.
