STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF EDMODO AS A SUPPLEMENTARY TOOL IN LEARNING

Abstract


A number of social media have been adopted in the digital 21st century education. Edmodo is now one of the learning sites which is being employed by lecturers and students in many educational institutions including School of Foreign Languages – Thai Nguyen University (SFL- TNU). However, there is still limited research at SFL- TNU about the students’ perceptions on the use of Edmodo as a supplementary tool for learning. This study; therefore, examines the effectiveness of using Edmodo as a supplementary tool for learning at School of Foreign Language – Thai Nguyen University (SFL- TNU) from students’ perspective. 120 students responded to a survey questionnaire intended to analyze students’ perceptions about the research inquiries. The findings show that the majority of students who participated in the study considered Edmodo as a beneficial supplementary site for their learning. Besides, the research reveals some advantages of this learning site. It is said that Edmodo helps students enhance their knowledge of the courses, motivate them in learning and create a good learning tool to supplement face to face discussions and a good collaboration platform for students and teachers. However, there are also some disadvantages when using Edmodo such as time consuming, difficulty in following the procedures of Edmodo, plagiarism of other works and not all students have access to the internet.
