THE DEFENSE BASE SYSTEM ON THE LAND OF HA TIEN UNDER THE NGUYEN DYNASTY (1802-1859)

Abstract

Ha Tien was a borderland under the Nguyen dynasty that was intimately tied to the construction, development, and protection of the country’s territorial sovereignty in the southwestern border region. As a result, the Nguyen dynasty attempted to push operations to create and strengthen the system of defense facilities on this region in order to improve its defense capacity. The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the appearance of the defensive base system on Ha Tien land as an important aspect of the Nguyen dynasty’s defense and development of the southwestern border region from 1802 to 1859. Through the work of collecting and criticizing historical documents, historical methods combined with logical methods, the research results shed light on the defensive base system of the Nguyen dynasty in the land of Ha Tien with two lines of defense, including land and islands. The findings give a better understanding of the Nguyen dynasty’s defensive policy on the Southwestern frontier region from 1802 to 1859.
