Abstract

To update information on the current condition, exploitation, and usage of fish resources; which create the foundation to propose conservation and sustainable development measures, the present study conducted seven interviews with local fishers and residentss in 4 areas, i.e.,: Bac Me Nature Reserve, Nam Xuan Lac Nature Reserve, Cham Chu Nature Reserve, and Phia Oac-Phia Den National Park. Based on 48 questionnaires, the results show that fish are not an important income source for local people, but fish consumption here in daily meals is high (average 2-4 days/week and about 0.50-0.93 kg/day). It also indicates that the impact of water pollution and over-exploitation along with the use of destructive gears, such as electrofishing has declined the fish resource. The people's knowledge of fish resources is still relatively low, and the conservation programs or propaganda to protect resources are limited and not regularly implemented. Therefore, the article suggested measure to conservation and sustainable development of fish resources in study areas.
