Abstract

Despite being popular, the slow growth rate and poor coloration of artificially produced clownfish pose significant obstacles in the efforts to develop aquaculture for this species. Bioactive substances such as astaxanthin and vitamins have been proven to be effective in promoting growth, coloration, and overall health in fish. In this study, we evaluated the effects of supplementing astaxanthin from Copepoda in the feed on the rearing outcomes of Nemo clownfish. Six feed formulations supplemented with astaxanthin were tested, including 0 (control), 50, 150, 250, 350, and 450 mg/kg of feed. The fish were reared in 60-liter glass tanks with 15 individuals per tank. Each treatment was replicated three times over a period of 75 days. The results showed that growth parameters (SGRL, SGRW), feed conversion ratio, and coloration of the fish were all improved corresponding to the level of supplemented astaxanthin, with the best values observed in the range of 350-450 mg/kg of feed (P < 0.05). The survival rate of the fish was not significantly affected by astaxanthin supplementation (P > 0.05). This study provides a positive solution using natural astaxanthin as a means to enhance the efficiency of rearing this marine ornamental fish species.
