Abstract

Determining the optimal business cycle for planted forests in terms of both economic and silvicultural efficiency is an important issue for forest managers and forest owners to establish appropriate silvicultural techniques and sustainably manage forests. In this study, 16 temporary plots were established with an area of 400 m2 for data collection on the growth and economic efficiency of Acacia hybrid stands from 4 to 8 years old in Tuyen Quang. The results showed that the average diameter, height, and volume tended to increase, but the average growth in diameter, height, and volume generally declined as the stand increased with each age. At various harvest ages, the Net Present Value, Benefit Cost Ratio, and Internal Rate of Return were all positive. The economic efficiency indicators reached its highest in the 5-year cycle, the net present value reaching 11.8 million VND/ha/year, Benefit Cost Ratio 2.9 times, Internal Rate of Return 41.7%. This was also the period of highest reserve growth, averaging 27.05 m3/ha/year. Forest owners thus determine the acacia hybrid plantations' business cycle in order to supply the best small timber in terms of both economics and silviculture.
