Abstract

Motion auxiliaries are common functional words in modern Chinese. Due to the complexity of their denotative meaning and usage, two motion auxiliaries “le” and “guo” have caused deal of difficulties for students during the learning process when learners often make mistakes in using these two motion auxiliaries. The article is based on linguistic knowledge about motion auxiliaries initiated by Shuxiang Lu in the book “800 modern Chinese vocabulary” and on the analysis of the results of a survey on the students’ mistakes in using the two motion auxiliaries "le” and “guo” over 100 Chinese language’s sophomores at the School of Foreign Languages - Thai Nguyen University to identify common errors like repetition, omission, wrong position, wrong usage, or false recognition of the verbs. The findings revealed that the main causes of all the aforementioned errors were the grammatical complexity of the verbs, the effects of mother tongue, and the teaching materials themselves. Accordingly, the author is to propose some teaching recommendations to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning this relevant knowledge.
