Listening comprehension is of paramount importance in communication process as well as in teaching and learning foreign languages. This verbal activity, albeit, has been given modest insights so far. From the perspective of teaching methodology on foreign languages and on the basis of ministerial-level scientific research’s findings (Code: B2009-TN09-01), the author presents a number of specific issues regarding listening comprehension in foreign languages: how listening comprehension is defined, how important it is, what role it plays, and how listening comprehension is classified so that further theoretical understanding is obtained. To this end, the research methods utilized were documental synthesis-analysis in conjunction with experiment. The paper can be considered as one of the contributions to the theory of listening comprehension, from which new teaching methodologies are proposed with a view to improving the effectiveness in teaching and learning this verbal activity.
